Greetings, Resilience Warriors. I’m Jim Lunsford. Let’s dive deep into one of the most crucial aspects of substance abuse therapy: letting go. This is a journey I’ve walked myself and one that continues to shape my daily life and the lives of countless others on the path to recovery.

Letting go is more than just a phrase—it’s a transformative practice that can redefine our approach to life and healing. Picture this: you’re holding onto a heavy rock, and each day, the weight bears down on you, making every step harder than the last. This rock represents grudges, rigid mindsets, and unhealthy coping mechanisms—things that might feel familiar but are ultimately detrimental to your well-being.

For me, letting go was a critical step in my battle against addiction. It wasn’t just about putting down the bottle or stepping away from the pills; it was about releasing the mental chains that kept me bound to a lifestyle of self-destruction. The journey began with a simple yet profound realization: to move forward, I had to let go of the past.

I remember a particularly pivotal moment in my recovery journey. I was attending a support group meeting, and a fellow participant shared a story about his father. His father had passed away years ago, but the pain and unresolved anger still haunted him. It was a stark reminder that holding onto these emotional burdens can stifle our growth and keep us tethered to our old ways.

At that moment, I decided to confront my own unresolved issues. There were grudges I held, people I hadn’t forgiven, and a rigid mindset that convinced me I was beyond redemption. These were my heavy rocks. I began to understand that these elements were not just obstacles—they were part of the very foundation of my addiction.

So, how do we let go? How do we drop these rocks and free ourselves to climb higher?

  • Acknowledge the Pain: The first step is to recognize and accept that you are carrying these burdens. This might be the hardest part, as it requires a level of honesty and vulnerability that can be uncomfortable. For me, admitting that I was still angry with myself for past mistakes was the key to beginning this process.
  • Forgive Yourself and Others: Forgiveness is a powerful tool in letting go. It’s not about condoning the actions that hurt you but about freeing yourself from the grip of those emotions. I had to forgive myself for the years lost to addiction and the pain I caused to those I love. This wasn’t an overnight process—it took time, patience, and a lot of self-reflection.
  • Change Your Mindset: A rigid mindset can trap you in a cycle of negativity and self-doubt. Embracing a growth mindset, where challenges are seen as opportunities for growth rather than insurmountable obstacles, can make a significant difference. This shift allowed me to see my addiction not as a life sentence but as a challenge that I had the power to overcome.
  • Find Healthy Coping Mechanisms: Part of letting go involves replacing unhealthy habits with positive ones. Physical fitness became my sanctuary. Every run, every lift, every drop of sweat was a step towards reclaiming my life. Engaging in activities that promote well-being can provide the strength needed to move forward.
  • Seek Support: Letting go is not a journey to be taken alone. Whether it’s through therapy, support groups, or trusted friends and family, having a support system is crucial. I found strength in my community—people who understood my struggles and stood by me through the darkest times.
  • Practice Mindfulness and Meditation: These practices can help you stay present and focused, reducing the power of past grievances. Mindfulness teaches you to acknowledge your thoughts and feelings without letting them control you. It was through mindfulness that I learned to let go of the constant mental chatter and find peace in the present moment.
  • Set New Goals: Having something to strive towards can keep you motivated and forward-looking. For me, establishing goals in my fitness and professional life provided a sense of purpose and direction. It reminded me that there was a future worth fighting for.

In my own experience, letting go transformed my life in ways I never imagined. It wasn’t just about overcoming addiction; it was about rediscovering who I was beyond the substances. It was about finding strength in my vulnerabilities and turning my scars into stories of resilience and hope.

Today, as a life coach and advocate, I share this journey with others. I see the power of letting go in the eyes of those I work with—people who are learning to drop their rocks and find new strength within themselves. It’s a continuous process, one that requires commitment and courage, but the rewards are immeasurable.
